Instead of waiting in line for a customs officer, people in the Global Entry program can simply go up to an automated kiosk available in numerous major airports around the United States and complete a few simple steps to be allowed back into the country. Global Entry members enjoy shorter wait times and the benefits of TSA pre-check eligibility.
What happens when I renew my passport?
Global Entry members often wonder what effect renewing their passports will have on their membership. Unfortunately, when you renew a passport, your Global Entry account doesn’t automatically update itself. However, the process for updating your account is quite simple and can be done online. Simply go to the Global Entry Online Enrollment System. Log into your account and make the necessary changes to reflect the status of your new passport.
When you update your account online, you won’t be issued a new Global Entry sticker for your passport. However, you don’t actually need the sticker in order to take advantage of Global Entry. If you would like a new sticker, you can obtain one by visiting a Global Entry, Nexus, or SENTRI enrollment center. Again, this is an unnecessary step, but if you really like the sticker, go for it.
What if I changed my name?
If your new passport involves a name change, then updating your Global Entry account becomes a little bit trickier. You won’t be able to make the changes online, but will instead need to make an appointment to speak with a CBP officer at your local Global Entry enrollment center. In addition to this appointment, you will also be responsible for a $25 fee to pay for a new Global Entry card. When you change your name for any reason, remember that your name must be the same on your plane ticket and your passport.
You should also keep in mind that the rules for updating your Global Entry account are the same whether you are simply renewing your passport or need to replace a lost passport. If you lose your passport, remember to report the loss to the US State Department as soon as possible. This will help protect your identity and ensure that whoever finds your passport is unable to travel with it.
