The Bahamas, also known officially as the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, is located in the West Indies. The archipelagic state is made up of over 700 islands, cays, and islets in the Atlantic Ocean. Other islands in the area include Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Turks and Caicos Islands, and the state of Florida. The capital of the Bahamas is Nassau, which exists on the island of New Providence. The Bahamas territory spans 180,000 square miles throughout the ocean.
