Bulgarian Embassy Information

Bulgaria is located in Southeast Europe and is bordered by Romania, Serbia, North Macedonia, Greece, Turkey, and the Black Sea. It is a fairly large European country, including a territory of 42,855 square miles. Sofia is the capital city and also the largest city. The country’s motto is “Unity makes strength.” Bulgaria has had a democratic constitution since 1991, existing as a unitary parliamentary republic. It has a population of almost seven million people, the bulk of whom reside in Sofia, though the population has been on the decline since the 1980s. Bulgaria’s economy consists of machine building, mining, and agriculture. It is a member of NATO, the Council of Europe, and the European Union.
