  • The REAL ID Deadline Has Been Extended

The REAL ID deadline has once again been pushed back. Initially, travelers had until May 3, 2023, to make sure that their ID was REAL ID compliant. But this deadline has now changed and has been extended until May 7, 2025. Although this may come as good news for those who haven’t had time to update their identification cards, it has left others confused about why the deadline keeps changing.

If you’re looking for some clarity, here’s everything you need to know about the REAL ID deadline extension:

    Why Was the Deadline Extended?

One of the main reasons the REAL ID deadline was extended is to ensure Americans have more time to get their driver’s license REAL ID ready. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, it has been challenging for people to get to the DMV, and many travelers haven’t yet updated their ID. Another reason the deadline was pushed back is due to the significant amount of backlog right now, with the government struggling to keep up.

When is the New REAL ID Deadline?

Originally, the REAL ID deadline was set for May 3, 2023. Although, this deadline has been pushed back and is now set for May 7, 2025. Be aware that this deadline has been changed numerous times and could change again in the future. You can stay up to date with the deadline by going to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security website.

How do I Know if My Driver’s License or ID Is REAL ID Compliant?

It’s simple to determine if your driver’s license or ID is REAL ID compliant. You’ll be able to tell if you’re REAL ID ready by looking at your license and seeing if there’s a circle with a star in the corner of your card. How Can I Get REAL ID Ready?

You can visit your local DMV to get a REAL ID in most states. You will need to bring along specific documentation, so be sure to look online or call your nearest DMV to ensure that you bring all of the necessary items. In most cases, at the minimum, you will need to bring documentation that shows your full legal name, social security number, date of birth, proof of address, and lawful status.

Do I Have to Get REAL ID to Fly?

Starting May 7, 2025, every traveler 18 years of age or older will be required to have a driver’s license that is REAL ID compliant, an enhanced driver’s license, or another form of accepted identification.
